Marginal Contributions and Externalities in the Value∗

چکیده
Our concern is the extension of the theory of the Shapley value to problems involving externalities. Using the standard axiom systems behind the Shapley value for an arbitrary exogenous coalition structure leads to the identification of bounds on players’ payoffs around an “externality-free” value. In endogenizing the coalition structure, we analyze a two-stage process of coalition formation in whose second stage our axiomatic results are applied. We find reasons to explain inefficient coalition structures, and provide sufficient conditions for efficiency. JEL classification numbers: C7, D62

Competition among Virtual Communities and User Valuation: The Case of Investor Communities
Virtual communities are becoming a significant source of information sharing for consumers and businesses. This research examines how users value virtual communities and how virtual communities grow and compete with each other. In particular, the nature of trade-offs between network size and information quality, and the sources of positive and negative externalities are examined. We address the...
متن کاملThe Shapley Axiomatization for Values in Partition Function Games
One of the long-debated issues in coalitional game theory is how to extend the Shapley value to games with externalities (partition-function games). When externalities are present, not only can a player’s marginal contribution—a central notion to the Shapley value—be defined in a variety of ways, but it is also not obvious which axiomatization should be used. Consequently, a number of authors e...
متن کاملAn axiomatic characterization of a value for games in partition function form
An extension of the Shapley value for games in partition function form is proposed in the paper. We introduce a version of the marginal contributions for environments with externalities. The dummy property related to it is defined. We adapt the system of axioms provided by Shapley (A value for n-Person games. In: Kuhn H, Tucker A (eds) Contributions to the theory of games II. متن کاملIdentifying Human Capital Externalities: Theory with an Application to US Cities
Identification of the strength of human capital externalities at the aggregate level is still not fully understood. The existing method may yield positive or negative externalities even if wages reflect marginal social products. We propose an approach that yields positive average human capital externalities if and only if the marginal social product of workers with above-average human capital e...
متن کاملAnalysis of Electricity Generation’s Externalities on Sectorial Output Growth and Welfare in Iran
Environmental problems are one of the most challenging issues for the entire world and each country. In economic studies, environmental issues are analyzed as negative externalities. In this article, the negative externalities of electricity production on the output growth of different sectors and household’s welfare in Iran’s economy have been studied through price system using Computable Gene...
